An enormous 40-lakh (4 million) square foot mall is set to be built in Gurgaon, which upon completion will be the largest mall in the world. The Mall of India knocks long-time champion Mall of America in Minneapolis out of first place, which covers 38 lakh square feet, and sends a 30 lakh square foot mall in Beijing down to third. The average size of a mall in India is 2.5 lakh square feet, making the new mall 16 times larger. It is being developed by DLF Universal in conjuction with Jerde Partnership, who designed the malls in Minneapolis and Shanghi, and should be completed in 2007 at an estimated cost of Rs 1,500 crore.
