Gray Skies for India’s Airlines
While India’s aviation industry booms, state-owned Air India and India Airlines are falling behind. Obsolete planes, oversized workforces, and government mismanagement have caused the country’s largest carriers to lose ground to smaller private airlines, and now Air India and India Airlines are trying to restructure and make a comeback. After dealing with shoddy service, expensive tickets, and inadequate connections, India’s middle class have opted to go for the more reliable independent carriers, and the national airlines are desperately trying to get them back. Air India is planning to buy 50 new aircrafts, restructure management, and retrain employees, but industry analysts wonder if that will be enough.
