India Relaxes Flag-Wearing Laws

The Union cabinet approved a proposal today that would change the Flag Code of India to allow people to wear the Tricolour on garments that are worn above the waist, such as shirts and hats, but maintains the ban on sporting the flag on any garments worn below the waist, including shorts, bathing suits, and full-length dresses. The move comes from the lobbying of Naveen Jindal, who previously won the right for Indians to fly the flag outside their homes, and opposed the 2002 flag code amendment which prohibited Indians from wearing the flag on their clothes. Fashion designers were pleased with the decision, but many pointed out that in countries like the United States citizens are welcome to display flags anywhere in their wardrobe.
