Mumbai Rains Take Their Toll on Bollywood

Studios, film shoots, and equipment were among the casualties of last week’s heavy rains in Mumbai, with analysts estimating around Rs 500 million in damages to the Bollywood film industry. 12 movie shoots were cancelled, theaters around the city were empty, and studios were shut down as the rains paralyzed Mumbai, with many citizens concentrating on survival rather than the premieres of Yahaan, Sehar, and Sade-sath Phere, which were all victims of dismal box-office revenue. John Abraham even had to walk home after his car became stuck, and Amitabh Bachchan suffered flood damage to family and movie memorabilia in his two bungalows.

Bollywood’s been having a bad year - the Hindi-language film industry lost Rs 1.5 billion in the first half of this year, twice as much as the same period of last year, and only 10 of the 105 films released this year were able to even break even at the box office.
