Bollywood v. Maharashta Government
A disgruntled group of Bollywood bigwigs have founded an NGO called Jaag India, under which they will file a public-interest lawsuit (PIL) against the state government of Maharashta for their “complete system failure” in handling the Mumbai floods. Filmmakers like Mahesh Bhatt, Ashok Pandit, and Vinta Nanda say Jaag India wants to know who’s responsible for the failure in the city’s disaster management efforts, and are also demanding accountability as taxpayers. The organization is also critical of Maharashta’s city planning methods, in which townships are constructed first, followed by essentials like roads and sewers, which should come first.

Can someone explain the relationship of Maharashtra to Mumbai? Is Maharashtra a larger geographic/political area. In the US we have cities/counties/states as increasingly larger geopolitical entities. How are your geopolitical entities organized in India?
Thank you for a reply

Mumbai is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra, just as Boston is the capital of the American state of Massachusetts.
