Only 40% of Mumbaikars Have Sewer Access

Reports show that only 40 percent of Mumbai’s residents have access to sewers, leaving 50 percent of its residents in sewerless slums, and 15 percent still using obsolete septic tanks. Most of the city depends on the Mithri river for drainage, except it’s now clogged with debris and waste, forcing residents to deal with the 100-year-old drainage system incorporated by the British. And much blame for the severity of the recent flood damage goes towards the city’s lack of flood preparations, such as the absence of pumping stations which most coastal cities like San Francisco and Singapore employ to keep water levels low.
