Jharkhand Woman Branded ‘Witch’, Killed
In backwards news, a Jharkhand woman was declared a “witch” and killed with an axe in front of her son because she was believed to be responsible for a man’s illness. Salge Hembram of Ranikunder village in Jamshedpar was initially fined Rs 10,000 when she pleaded innocence to causing the sickness in a man named Vikram, and when she couldn’t pay she was hacked with an axe in front of her son, Jayram. Her body was then burned, apparently to “wipe out any evidence of the crime.”
Jayram could only report the incident to police a week after it happened. Since then, only one of the six people Jayram named in the killing have been arrested.
