PIL Seeks to Classify “Adult” Newspapers
A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Indian Supreme Court in an attempt to classify newspapers with content deemed to be “sexually explicit” with an “A,” meant to indicate that the paper contains adult material. PIL head Ajay Goswami accuses Indian newspapers of “[catering] to prurient interest of the public at large,” in the form of articles on pornography, sex education, semi-nude autographs, and offensive SMS jokes. He stresses that the media has a right to freedom of speech, but simply seeks to “shield minors from pornographic literature.”
The PIL was heard by the Supreme Court on Thursday. Looks like HTTabloid might have some new regulations to deal with!
