Sania Mirza makes India sports history (again)!

Battling numerous physical problems and her own mechanical errors, Sania Mirza overcame 65th-ranked rival Mashona Washington to become the first Indian in history to win a match at the US Open Grand Slam. The match, held on Monday at the Flushing Meadows was a true battle of will, rife with mistakes on both players parts, neither of them managing to fully capatolize on the others errors until Mirza pulled the win 2 hours and 13 minutes into the contest.

Suffering from a pulled abdominal muscle and an early lead from her American opponent (4-2 up), Sania still managed to pull out a victory, evidence of her growing maturity as a tennis player, and showing that India can compete in sports other than cricket.

More in Mirza here.

Hey Sania, Why don’t you work on your fitness. I find your serve is very weak and you look out of sorts after you have played three or four long matches. Don’t duck this aspect of the sport if you really want to be in the top 10. Agreed you have attained enough popularity and earned loads of money by Indian standards. But on the world stage you still have a long way to go.
