Europe lines up for Bollywood
European countries are clamoring for Bollywood– to shoot pictures in their countries that is. To promote their economies, major European powers are itching for slice of the spiciest cinema in the world: Bollywood. For example, after Switzerland was featured in a number of Bollywood films, Indian tourists to that country increased by 75,000 a year.
Out of the major players, the biggest so far is Ireland.
Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and John O’Donoghue, the minister for arts and tourism, who are leading a top-level delegation to India next month will meet Bollywood movie executives in Mumbai on January 20.
“Elaborate dance sequences in exotic locations are common elements to any Bollywood production,” said one arts department official. “Seen through Indian eyes, Ireland is an exotic location, believe it or not. Already in the past two years, 11 Indian movies have included some scenes in Ireland.” They included “Sachien” starring Vijay, a major Tamil star, and more recently, “Sukoon”, shot in counties Wicklow and Kildare
Maybe this year India will also see some recognition at the Oscars?
