Paheli chosen to go to Oscars: Invokes criticism
As of September 26, 2005, the Amol Palekar film ‘Paheli’ was chosen as the representative film which would compete in the Oscars this year.
Many contest this decision and the importance of the Oscars in the first place.
“What is the importance of these awards anyway?” they ask, wondering whether it makes any sense to try to squeeze a contestant into the American-film dominated competition for a measly, politically-correct ‘foreign film award’ which never really does justice to the rich filmmaking tradition from which it is plucked. It just doesn’t seem right.
Some point out that it may make more sense to choose the nomination more politically, such as with a film like “Veer-Zaara” which denotes a Pakistani-Indian love story and aligns well with the recently pleasantly diplomatic and friendly Cricket games between the two. that would be a good way to highlight this year with the measly slot at the Oscars, don’ t you think?
